I'd like to say that with the heat of summer in full swing, I wanted to find a "special" treat for my dogs that they'd enjoy and keep 'em cool. However, I must admit that ice cream for dogs, or better known as Purina Frosty Paws® are a regular in our household. As soon as dinner is over, Juno sits patiently by the fridge, waiting for that door to swing open and hear the words "DogGies want icccee creeeeam?!" I'm also embarrassed to admit that at $3.99-$4.99 per box of four, this has become a regular on the shopping list. Since Phil and I don't have human children yet, we tend to spoil Juno and Zeus. Still, $4 a box was becoming a bit much.
I knew there had to be a recipe or something online that could mimic this. Leave it to Pinterest to have plenty of knock off Frosty Paws recipes! I found one, tweaked it a bit and created my very first batch of dog ice cream!!
32 ounces of Plain yogurt (you can experiment with different flavors!)
1-2 bananas (I used two, but feel free to use more/less)
2 tablespoons of peanut butter
2 tablespoons of honey
Combine and mix all ingredients until creamy
Taste testers! I think they approve!
Pour batter into cups, ice trays, whatever you want (since this post, I've found recycled applesauce cups work best!) Then freeze!!
Patiently waiting to try it after freezing...
They definitely enjoyed these!!
I have not calculated the cost of the ingredients in comparison to buying Purina Frosty Paws®, but I can tell you the four ingredients are MUCH more cost effective, and one batch makes ~16 cups! So now, there are no more Frosty Paws®in our house...only Mommy made dog ice cream!
The only issue now is making sure Phil doesn't get HIS paws on 'em before Juno and Zeus!!
